“The Caribbean has called for agreement on a package of reforms to the structure of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) quota and voting power, stating that this is key in a rapidly-changing global economy. Speaking on behalf of 10 Caribbean Community (CARICOM)-member states along with Ireland and Canada during the IMF’s Monetary and Financial Committee’s 16th Meeting here, Canada’s Finance Minister James Michael Flaherty said progress in this area is ‘essential to strengthening the legitimacy of the IMF as a cooperative international monetary institution.’”

Flaherty, who advocated the views of Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, also said this would be the” foundation for progress on the wide range of initiatives that comprise the IMF’s Medium-Term Strategy.”

“Important progress has, indeed, been made in recent months,” he said, pointing out that the named countries have already agreed on the overall objectives of quota reform. He said this is to increase the voting share of developing countries, particularly dynamic economies, and to increase the voting share of Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility countries.

Auctions can be an excellent way for small organizations to raise seed money with which to start pilot programs. Sometimes these new programs will work, and can be expanded. Other times, the decision will be made to discontinue but it will still have been an important learning experience for the organization.

Pwof Ansanm (Teachers Together) is a small organization with a proven track record of improving the effectivness of teachers with innovative training techniques.

It would be a dis-service to call what many children are subjected to as education. The most qualified often avoid the profession, especially in rural areas. Who wants to go months without receiving a paycheck? The poorly trained teachers who accept the positions lectures the students in broken French who recite endlessly, but do not analyze and critique, the information they are presented. Questions are discouraged. Haiti would benefit from a cadre of Carribean Socratic instructors.

“Haiti is looking to a small shrub called jatropha to fuel an alternative energy boom that may help cut the impoverished country’s reliance on oil and charcoal. VOA’s Brian Wagner reports the efforts already are drawing the support of Brazil and the United States in developing clean and renewable fuel supplies.

The rising cost of foreign oil has governments and researchers around the world searching for cheaper and more sustainable forms of energy. In Haiti, the hope is centered on a native plant called jatropha curcas, which bears oily seeds that can be crushed and processed to produce diesel fuel for generators or vehicles.”

“Haiti Forum in Miami promotes Unity By Michael Imasua Jubilee USA Network Proclaiming Jubilee, a forum on overcoming the history of debt injustice in Haiti and Africa, was held in Miami on October 29. It was a great example of how public education on Debt Cancellation for impoverished countries is reaching out to a diverse population.

The Jubilee USA Network, the Miami Dade NAACP and the Pan African Student Association of Miami Dade College did a great job hosting and kicking off the event. Over 100 people showed up and were exposed to truth about the history of debt and what they can do to help fight for justice in impoverished countries.

Several influential individuals attended, including Mr. Desmond Alufohai, Dr. Michael Lenaghan, Mr. Ed Cooke, Fr. Jean Pierre, Michael E. Imasua, Marleine Bastien, Dr. Bradford E. Brown, and representatives from Florida Senator Bill Nelson’s Office and Florida Congressman Kendrick Meek’s Office.”
